Heat of the Moment: Whitebox Bottles the Summer in a Selfridges Exclusive
The bartender-founded brand redrawing the ready-to-serve cocktail arrives at Selfridges with a Spicy Mango Margarita — a tequila, lime, chilli and mango serve pitched squarely at the season’s defining flavour.
Whitebox Cocktails has built its reputation on a quietly radical proposition: that a cocktail poured from a can need not apologise for itself. This summer the Edinburgh-founded brand presses that case further, partnering with Selfridges on a Spicy Mango Margarita that marks its first serve created exclusively for the retailer.
Available now across Selfridges’ London, Manchester and Birmingham stores and on selfridges.com, the drink lands now the season turns. It is a deliberately timed arrival. The cocktail — tequila, lime, chilli and mango at 19.5% ABV, in a 100ml can priced at £4.99 builds on the brand’s popular Spicy Marg, folding ripe mango sweetness into its established chilli warmth.
The result, by Whitebox’s account, is a full-strength serve with citrus brightness, gentle heat and a tropical finish; best poured over ice in a rocks glass, garnished with chilli and a slice of mango. Dressed in Selfridges’ instantly recognisable Pantone 109 yellow, the can is engineered as much for the picture as the palate, a picnic prop, an after-work pour, a piece of effortless home entertaining.
Riding the ‘Fricy’ Wave
The launch is also a neat reading of where taste is heading. BBC Food and trend forecaster WGSN have both flagged ‘fricy’ the fusion of fruity and spicy, as one of the defining flavour movements of 2026. A mango-and-chilli margarita sits precisely at that intersection, and Whitebox is rarely shy about meeting a trend on its own terms while keeping a classic recipe intact.
“The Margarita is the world’s most popular cocktail, so there is plenty of demand for innovation around this drink,” says Ben Iravani, co-founder of Whitebox Cocktails. He describes the collaboration as a rebalancing act, building on the full-strength Spicy Marg, adding mango and recalibrating the spice to introduce a sweeter, fruit-forward dimension to one of the range’s best-sellers.
Bartenders, Not Marketers
What separates Whitebox from the crowded ready-to-serve field is its provenance. The brand was founded in Edinburgh in 2021 by a group of decorated bartenders among them Alex Lawrence, former head bartender at London’s Dandelyan and now a director at Mr Lyan Company, and Pietro Collina, bar director of the NoMad Hotel Group London, whose CV includes the beverage programme at three-Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park. It is, in the team’s telling, the first bartender-operated cocktail production site of its kind.
That pedigree shows in the approach. Recipes are developed in-house and viewed, as Iravani has put it, through the lens of a working bartender rather than a marketer, a discipline that has won the range an armful of Great Taste Awards. The catalogue now reads like a cocktail-bar back-bar in miniature: the Pocket Negroni, the Freezer Martini, Chipper’s Old Fashioned, Squeezy’s Margarita, the Classic Cosmo and Tiny Tee’s Dirty Martini among them.
The growth has been brisk. Since launch the brand has expanded production capacity into the millions of cans a year, secured listings across more than a thousand UK retail outlets and pushed into international markets, with stockists ranging from Selfridges and Harrods to Amazon. The Spicy Mango Margarita takes the core range to fourteen serves, a portfolio that has steadily moved into bolder, higher-strength territory as drinkers’ confidence in the format has grown.
A Considered Fit
For Selfridges, the partnership extends a long-running appetite for exclusive launches and emerging disruptors alongside established luxury names, the same instinct that fills its Corner Shop with rotating concepts from the likes of Loewe, Celine and Martine Rose. For Whitebox, a serve in the retailer’s signature yellow is a statement of where the brand now sits: convenience reframed as something genuinely covetable.
The Whitebox Cocktails Spicy Mango Margarita is now available exclusively at Selfridges London, Manchester and Birmingham, and on selfridges.com.
